Our Patients Prefer Tooth-Colored Fillings
Dental fillings are one of the most common procedures performed by a dentist. Fillings are a suitable and proper way to prevent infection and improve the oral aesthetics at the same time. Dr. Chris Baer is a leading cosmetic dentist for tooth fillings.
He receives patients from Aurora, Parker, Centennial, Denver, Elizabeth and Franktown, CO for this procedure. Tooth colored fillings have an advantage that they will not reveal conspicuously when a person smiles. Therefore, many patients prefer tooth colored fillings today.
Types of Tooth Colored Fillings
Tooth colored fillings are usually available in the following material types:
Composite fillings are fantastic from an aesthetic viewpoint, but they are not very resilient. These fillings are made from composite resin, and matched with the shade of teeth. If the patient needs a filling in one of the front teeth, a dentist may provide a composite filling.
However, for posterior molar teeth, where the biting and chewing pressure is higher, these fillings may not be the best choice. Composite fillings are more affordable, aesthetically better, but may break more easily compared to other tooth colored fillings.
Glass Ionomer Fillings
Glass ionomer materials are a relatively new form of tooth colored fillings that perform the aesthetic role more effectively. However, these fillings have the same limitation as composite fillings, and are appropriate for teeth where the patient does not have to bite down hard.
Longevity of this tooth colored filling may be better than that of composite fillings. The advantage is that these fillings contain fluoride, which will work to prevent tooth decay.
Among tooth colored fillings, porcelain material is the most tried and tested option that is recommended by many cosmetic dentists. Dr. Baer will explain the pros and cons of various filling options to his patients in Aurora, Parker, Centennial, Denver, Elizabeth and Franktown, CO.
Porcelain is a naturally hard material, which has a shade very similar to the shade of the teeth. Porcelain fillings are long lasting, but again, these should preferably be used only for the front teeth where the biting pressure is low.
The dentist will begin the filling procedure by applying a local anesthetic to numb the area around the tooth that needs a filling. Laser, air abrasive device, or drill will be used to remove the decay from the targeted area. The dental technique may be used according to the patient’s aesthetic needs and the dentist’s expertise in a particular methodology.
Once the decay has been taken out, the dentist will prepare the tooth for the filling. If the decay exists near the tooth root, glass ionomer or composite resin may be used first as a lining. Once the filling process is completed, the dentist will finish and polish the area to make it appear natural and matching with the rest of the teeth.
The tooth colored material is usually applied in layers, depending on the location of the tooth. A special light may be used to cure or harden each layer as it is applied. Once the layering is complete, the dentist will trim off the excess material, and polish the final restoration.
