Well, should we live in Denver or Boulder? How about Arvada, CO? It sits right between both of these dynamic cities. 10 miles to Denver or 20 miles to Boulder. Of course, immediately to your west are the majestic Rocky Mountains if you are needing an escape from the urban hustle. Let’s take a look at Arvada.
Arvada is located directly northwest of Denver proper and has its own unique history. Back in 1850 when Lewis Ralston first found gold in a stream coming out of the Rockies his friends named the stream after him. During the actual Pike’s Peak Gold Rush of 1858 the gold panned out and many of the prospectors went back to the fertile bottom land along Ralston Creek. Their crops did well amongst the other gold seekers and the farms expanded in the valley. In 1870 the railroad came through and to avoid confusion along the stops the community of Ralston Creek was renamed Arvada after one of the first settlers in the valley. The town was finally incorporated in 1904 and claimed the title of “Celery capital of the World” due to its agricultural success. For the same reasons in how we opened, Arvada continued to grow with the growth of both Denver and Boulder. Being the center of the valley Arvada grew methodically. The fire and police departments were formed in the early 1900s and a trolley was popular going to Denver. The first paved street came in 1925 for automobile traffic.
Arvada claims to have around 118,000 residents today. Mostly a commuter town for both Denver and Boulder there is easy access with Interstate 70 on the southern edge moving traffic east and west and a super highway 36 on the eastern edge taking you north and south. You can go north and south also on highway 93 on the western edge of town so commuting is convenient. The median age today of the city residents is just shy of 40. There are 21 public schools, 122 parks and 149 miles of trails for hiking and biking. These numbers represent that nice methodical growth. Arvada was awarded a Silver medal when it comes to being acknowledged as a bicycle friendly city.
If you want to get a feel of the community visit Olde Town Arvada which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. You’ll find unique shopping here as well as adventurous dining experiences. There are many craft breweries, galleries and theaters to compliment the diversity of this cultural district. Arvada has plenty of entertainment available along Wadsworth Boulevard running north and south through the community. Arvada boosts one of Colorado’s wealthiest zip codes. The neighborhoods are quiet and it is a nice compliment with just enough business to keep the community robust. There are many other attributes that contribute to Arvada being the 8 th largest city in Colorado. So, what do you think about Arvada? Seems like the perfect place to be between Denver and Boulder!
