A 20 minute drive to the northeast from downtown Denver you will find the community of Brighton, Colorado. Many, many small towns found their origin in the 1800’s with the introduction of a train depot and the town grew around it. The one thing that is unique about Brighton, Colorado is that this town found its start with a stagecoach depot. The stagecoach depot was established in 1862 and then the train depot was built nine years later. Originally called the Hughes Station. When the town was incorporated in 1881 it was officially called Brighton, after Brighton Beach, New York. The population at that time was 175 residents. The town consisted of a school, a church, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, a meat market, two general stores, a post office, a railroad station, a telegraph station, a newspaper, a creamery and of course, three saloons. Initially through the 1900’s the dairy industry was the largest employer for the community since it gave year round employment. The city is an established agricultural center today.
Brighton is very conveniently located next to three major highways allowing for quick and easy access and commuting. The city now has over 38,000 residents. The biggest boom was with the closing of Stapleton airport and the creation of the new Denver International airport. Brighton is closer to the airport than the majority of Denver!
