Henderson, Colorado’s history begins with the settlement of John D. Henderson in Adams County in 1854. Although the city has remained an unincorporated rural community, its role in Colorado history is quite large. The trading post established in what is now the city was the first permanent settlement in the South Platte River Valley. It served as a gateway to Denver when European explorers poured into the region in the 1870’s and traveled up the South Platte River. It was at this time that gold was found at the base of the Rocky Mountains and with the California gold rush fresh in everyone’s minds, settlers began racing to the Denver area get lucky and find gold. In 1894, the first post office opened in the community, which at the time was known as Henderson Island. The community sat at the far northeastern edge of Adams County and the Denver Metropolitan area and throughout its history it has remained rural and unincorporated.
There are still several buildings that stand from the original community. Of these buildings, the Henderson Community Church is one of the best preserved of the original buildings. The community has remained small, with a population of just over 11,000 people. Its location almost halfway between Denver and Boulder makes it an ideal spot for people who want to live in the metropolitan area but still have the quiet comforts of a small community. Home prices in the community are on the higher end for the area.
