This unincorporated community has some interesting history that plays into the decision today to keep much of the development very contained and disciplined. The most interesting fact about Ken Caryl, Colorado, is that it started as a toll road. Not a stage coach stop, not a railroad depot, but a lodging house and a road to the mining camps that charged $1.50 per wagon back in 1859. The venture was quite lucrative for Major Robert Bradford with the number of families continuing to move west until 1867 when a better road was built up Turkey Creek Canyon. The ranch saw many owners in the years to follow raising dairy cows then switching to beef cattle. The Ute Indians were run off as were some unpleasant characters after the Civil War. A William Allen bought the ranch in 1937 and raised cattle until 1971 when the ranch was sold to a corporation. A large corporate campus was built for Lockheed Martin and then the property was sold again to Martin Marietta Astronautics Group in 1987. The Black Angus where moved out and the ranch ground opened for development. Only then did the valley, or the old ranch, begin to take the shape of the neighborhoods it holds today.
Old West Character
Some towns and cities keep an old west feel with some of their main streets. The Ken Caryl community of now 35,000 residents has kept that frontier spirit with over 6,000 acres dedicated to green space. In 1988 the city of Lakewood attempted to annex the Ken Caryl area and the residents voted to remain unincorporated. The developers have turned the reins over to a board of directors that invest in the residents’ opinions and efforts to maintain the old west beauty that surrounds them.
