In 1859 when someone shouted out GOLD you kind of assumed that everyone flocking to the eastern Rockies was panning for the mineral. Actually the gold rush opened many opportunities for merchants and farmers to provide the many necessities of the growing market. That is what is unique about Littleton, Colorado. An engineer by the name of Richard Little came from New Hampshire to design and build a series of irrigation ditches to carry water to those growing farms. The town itself began to take shape in 1867 when several neighbors joined together to build the Rough and Ready Flour Mill. This gave the town an economic center. That was followed by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad in 1871. By the time the town was incorporated in 1890 there were 245 residents calling Littleton home.
Littleton is 10 miles or about 20 minutes due south of downtown Denver. You’re also only a few miles until you get into the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. Today nearly 50,000 people call Littleton home which is also the county seat for Arapahoe County.
Unlike suburbs that pop up to provide housing for commuters, Littleton, with its history, has a charming downtown with intact turn of the century buildings. You can stroll these streets and pop in and out of antique shops, boutique store fronts and galleries featuring local artists. You’ll also find many cozy eateries, restaurants and bars that seem to share the same theme; to relax. There are some very interesting events to enhance the small town character. The downtown hosts a Mardi Gras celebration in the spring, a Block Party in the summer, a Pig Roast in the fall, and a Candlelight Walk to start off the holidays.
With 300 days of sunshine you will not want for anything to do in Littleton. You can bike or hike on the 35 miles of paved trails or enjoy the 1,500 acres of parks and green spaces. You can swim, canoe, kayak or paddleboard in the Chatfield Reservoir. The Littleton Museum is on 39 acres and features two living history farms, one from 1860 and one from 1890. With dozens of factors being judged Littleton has been voted as one of the best small cities to live in by WalletHub.
