There are just so many terrific facts about this city, and all the small cities that surround it. One of those communities is Parker, Colorado. One of the neat facts about Parker, Colorado is that as it continues to grow it still has some ranches and farms in its midst. Let’s see what other fun facts we can find out about Parker.
Parker is located about a 35 minute drive to the southeast of Denver. 75% of its residents, which number now over 50,000, commute via their cars and trucks. Parker is the second largest city in Douglas County behind the county seat of Castle Rock. They are doing something right in Parker. The young students in the community rank as some of the smartest in the state. Maybe it’s because the majority of the parents in Parker have college educations.
The area was originally occupied by the Native American Indian tribes made up of Arapahoe, Cheyenne and the Utes. White men explored the area with the discovery of gold in 1858. Parker was established in 1864 as the Pine Grove Way Station. This one room building was a place to leave messages, get some provisions and handle the mail. It was traded for a yoke of oxen, moved to what will become Main Street, added on to, and became “mile house”. Named the 20 Mile House because that was the distance to Denver, it became a stage stop and provided meals and lodging. It was traded yet again for a team of mules and then finally sold to James Parker around 1870. That is when the stop began growing, with the addition of a blacksmith shop, a mercantile store and a schoolhouse. The Denver and New Orleans Railroad then came to town in 1882. Parker had owned much of the ground around the town and continued to will property for continued growth and expansion.
Denver is known as the Mile High City with an elevation of 5,280 feet. Parker is actually higher at 5, 869 feet. Parker lists over 1,600 businesses and the residents really like the small town culture and feeling they share. There a many, many community activities and events. With all the amenities of Denver only 20 miles away that is the great benefit about Parker, Colorado. A fantastic trail runs along Cherry Creek from Parker into Denver, very popular for cyclists and joggers. The trail follows the same route that was used by the Indian tribes. Outdoor recreation abounds in Parker to compliment the many new schools and the diverse population. If you need to leave Parker for a day you can find anything under that bright sun in Denver from entertainment, shopping and dining. Then back to your quiet neighborhood and under the blanket of a sky full of stars for the evening. What is there not to like about Parker, Colorado!
