Parker was established in 1864 as the Pine Grove Way Station. This one room building was a place to leave messages, get some provisions and handle the mail. It was traded for a yoke of oxen, moved to what will become Main Street, added on to, and became “mile house”. Named the 20 Mile House because that was the distance to Denver, it became a stage stop and provided meals and lodging. It was traded yet again for a team of mules and then finally sold to James Parker around 1870. That is when the stop began growing, with the addition of a blacksmith shop, a mercantile store and a schoolhouse. The Denver and New Orleans Railroad then came to town in 1882. Parker had owned much of the ground around the town and continued to will property for continued growth and expansion.
