Different Types of Dentures

While people often have a certain idea of what dentures are in their head, there is actually a diversity of different types of dentures—each with unique advantages. The type of denture that is right for a patient will depend on a variety of factors, including cost and the particular needs of the patient.

What Dentures Are

Dentures are teeth replacement prosthetics that are used to replace a large portion or all of a patient’s teeth. They are made with durable materials, allowing a patient to use them regularly without worrying about replacements.

Types of Dentures

There are different dentures that are right for different patients. Below are a few of the different types of dentures:

Traditional Dentures

Traditional dentures are made in a lab, and are custom made for the needs of each particular patient. These dentures are not placed until the patient’s gums are allowed to heal after an extraction. A mold is used so the dentures properly fit the mouth of the patient, and the teeth are customized by the dentist to better look however the patient wants them to.

Immediate Dentures

Immediate dentures are placed immediately after an extraction. Not all patients are good candidates for immediate dentures. Immediate dentures also need to be adjusted within a few months of placement.

Full Dentures and Partial Dentures

Patients will have either full dentures or partial dentures placed. As their names imply, partial dentures replace a portion of the teeth, while full dentures replace all of the teeth. Dentists generally prefer to keep as many healthy teeth as possible, but if there aren’t enough healthy teeth, full dentures will be placed.

Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures are dentures that are held in place with dental implants. These implants involve the placement of titanium screws in the jawbone (or a bar placed in the jawbone).

Implant-supported dentures are a much more secure option than traditional dentures, and allow for greater functionality. In order for a patient to have implant-supported dentures placed, though, their jawbone will often need to be strong enough to hold the dentures in place.

Snap-In Dentures

Another option that is often held in place with implants or anchors to healthy teeth are snap-in dentures. These are more secure than traditional dentures, and can allow for a greater amount of functionality.

Speak with Your Dentist

While there may be a variety of different types of dentures to choose from, not all types of dentures are right for every patient. Because of this, you’ll want to speak with your dentist about what type of dentures are right for your needs. You may need to consider factors such as the health of your jawbone, whether all of your teeth need to be replaced, cost and more. Once your dentist and you have made a decision, they can begin the process of placing or creating your dentures.

Dentures are an excellent option for patients that would like to continue to bite, chew and smile much like they did before they lost their teeth.
