How Invisalign Works

Invisalign is an exciting option for patients that have crooked teeth or alignment issues, but don’t want to deal with the hassle that can come with traditional braces. With the cutting-edge technology used in the Invisalign alignment process, patients are able to see amazing results, while wearing braces that are comfortable and nearly invisible!

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign braces are dental appliances that are used to shift the alignment of a patient’s teeth. This is done with the use of clear, plastic trays that are regularly swapped out.

Why Invisalign?

Invisalign has become popular over the years because it allows for the treatment of moderate alignment issues without a lot of the fuss that comes with traditional braces. Whereas traditional metal braces are fixed, Invisalign braces can be easily removed for eating and oral care.
Traditional metal braces can also be uncomfortable, as the wires can become lose causing damage to the mouth. Invisalign braces are smooth and comfortable to wear—with no metal parts to cut the insides of the mouth. Finally, Invisalign braces are clear—making them difficult to see. Many patients find that their friends and loved ones don’t even notice when they are wearing their Invisalign braces.

How Long Does Invisalign Take?

The length of the alignment process will come down to a variety of different factors, as Invisalign braces can be used to treat a variety of alignment issues. These alignment issues include:

  • Crooked Teeth
  • Teeth Crowding
  • Gaps in Teeth
  • Overbites
  • Underbites

While all patient are unique, the average length of treatment is around 12 months. A variety of factors will affect how long your individual treatment is, and your orthodontist will be able to give you a better idea of how long your treatment should take.

What Is the Process?

The first step for Invisalign wearers is to visit you dentist for a consultation. If your dentist decides that you are a good candidate for Invisalign braces, they will begin the process of creating a series of custom trays for your specific needs. This is done by making a scan of your mouth, then using the scan to create a custom plan of alignment. Your dentist will take that information and send it to a lab to have the custom trays created. From there, you will be responsible for switching the trays every two weeks. You will also be required to visit your
orthodontist regularly to ensure that your teeth are shifting properly.

Am I a Candidate for Invisalign?

While Invisalign braces are an excellent choice for minor to moderate alignment issues, they are not always an option for more severe alignment issues. It’s also important to note that Invisalign braces can be more expensive than traditional braces—making them unaffordable for some patients.

Speak with your insurance company about whether or not they cover Invisalign braces. Then, set an appointment with an Invisalign provider to see if you are a candidate for Invisalign. If you are, they can begin the planning process, and get you started on your alignment journey.
