Same Day Dentures / Immediate Dentures

Having your teeth pulled or watching them fall out over time can be disheartening. You may worry about never being able to smile again. There is actually an excellent solution that can return your smile, and give you back your confidence. This solution is dentures.

Dentures

Dentures are a type of dental prosthetic that is custom made for the patient which replaces the missing teeth. They are made of a durable material closely resembling natural teeth. They can be made to look very similar to a patient’s original teeth. While dentures are often used to replace an entire set of teeth, partial dentures allow a patient to keep part of their original teeth.

Why Dentures?

Dentures are an excellent option for patients wanting to speak, chew and bite—even after their teeth have been removed. While dentures do not allow for the same support as other replacement options, they still allow the patient to eat certain foods, and they allow the patient to continue to speak like they used to. Dentures can also help to return volume to the face and keep muscles in the face from sagging.

Traditional Dentures

The placement of traditional dentures will often start with the extraction of any remaining teeth that need to be pulled. From there, the gums are given time to heal. Once they are healed, a dentist can place the full, custom made set of dentures.

Immediate Dentures/Same Day Dentures

Unlike traditional dentures, immediate dentures (also known as “same day dentures”) can be placed the same day as the extraction. This not only allows the patient to leave the dental office with the confidence of having a full smile of teeth, but it also helps with the healing process by protecting the tissue around where the teeth were extracted.

It is important to note that same day dentures will need to be relined soon after the tissue has healed. This is because as the gum tissue heals after teeth are removed, it shrinks and creates space between the gum tissue and inside of the denture. Due to the additional appointment and the additional work that needs to be done, immediate dentures are often more expensive than traditional dentures. Same day dentures also are not an option for all patients.

Speak with Your Dentist

Replacing your teeth after they are extracted is very important for maintaining the structure of the face, and for providing a sense of confidence. Many patients find that—without their teeth—they become self-conscious, which in turn leads to a decline in their overall mood. With dentures, a patient is able to speak, laugh and smile without feeling self-conscious.

If you are having a good portion or all of your teeth extracted, speak with your dentist about partial or full dentures. If your dentist decides that full dentures are the best option for you, ask about immediate dentures. They will discuss whether or not same day dentures are the right choice for your needs and your budget. If they aren’t, traditional dentures will likely still be an option.

Same day dentures may allow you to walk out of the office with an almost instant smile makeover, leaving you ready to show your smile off to the world!
