What is Teeth Cleaning?
When was the last time you visited the dentist for a cleaning and checkup? If it’s been a bit, that’s understandable, life happens. With that said, it’s imperative that you get a general cleaning and checkup appointment in the books.
Why a Teeth Cleaning?
Teeth cleanings help to ensure the ongoing health of your teeth, gums, tongue, and overall oral cavity. Through the removal of harmful plaque, tartar, and debris, you can avoid issues like gum disease, plaque buildup, infected root pulp, cavities, and more.
What Happens During a Teeth Cleaning?
During your teeth cleaning, your dentist or hygienist will first take X-rays (if you haven’t had them taken in a while- we use digital X-rays which dramatically reduce the amount of radiation needed to make a picture). Then your teeth will be thoroughly examined. Once your teeth have undergone an examination, your hygienist will use special tools to remove plaque and tartar buildup, along with food debris and bacteria. Often, your cleaning will end with a polishing of your teeth. From there, a dentist will come and perform their own examination, along with evaluating your X-rays (if they were performed). If they determine there are any additional oral health issues that need to be addressed, we will discuss the findings and go over treatment options to get you back to optimal oral health.
Routine cleanings and checkups generally take very little time and can often be completed in under an hour.
If you have any questions for your dentist about cleaning, flossing, or any other issues you may have, feel free to ask. They are happy to help you.
Plaque and Tartar Prevention
In order to ensure your cleaning goes quickly and with minimal discomfort, it’s best to take care of your teeth ahead of time. This, of course, also comes with the benefit of avoiding oral health issues like cavities, gum disease, and more.
Make sure you brush your teeth twice a day thoroughly, rinse, and floss once a day. This will remove debris and bacteria. If you notice your gums are bleeding or you are experiencing any pain while brushing, reach out to your dentist to schedule an appointment. This is especially so if you don’t have a cleaning and checkup booked in the near future. If you have questions about whether or not you should schedule an appointment between cleanings, please reach out. We will discuss the issue with you and help determine if you should visit our office for an examination.
If you are experiencing a serious oral health issue like a broken tooth, severe bleeding, a knocked-out tooth, or any other major oral health concern, don’t wait for a regular visit; visit an emergency dentist.
We are here for you if you have any additional questions.
