How Often Should You Visit the Dentist?
One of the most common questions dentists get is how often a patient should visit the dentist. It’s extremely important to not only understand when you should visit the dentist but also schedule (and stick to) regular appointments to ensure your ongoing oral health.
Regular Cleanings and Checkups
Everyone needs to visit the dentist for regular cleanings and checkups. During these appointments, your dentist will take a look at your oral cavity to see if there are any issues that need to be addressed. This may include the use of X-rays. Your amazing hygienist will also provide you with a professional cleaning using specialized tools, along with polishing.
You should visit your dentist at a minimum every six months. Your dentist may request to see you more often, though, depending on the quality of your oral health.
Between Regular Visits
There are times when you will need to visit the dentist between your regularly scheduled cleanings and examinations. This may include visiting your dentist for more advanced procedures or because you are experiencing oral health issues that need to be addressed.
If you need to have a cavity placed, a deep cleaning, root canal therapy, or any other procedure, your dentist will schedule a time with you between regular visits to perform the procedure. You will also want to reach out to your dentist if you are experiencing issues like bleeding gums, tooth pain, or other issues that aren’t causing immediate distress. While you may not need emergency services, your dentist will still want to take a look at the issue and address it before it gets worse.
Emergency Visits
There are times when a dental emergency occurs that needs to be addressed immediately. When this is the case, it’s imperative that you visit an emergency dentist for immediate care. This may include issues like a broken tooth, a tooth that has been knocked out, intense pain, severe bleeding, and other issues that likely can’t wait for a scheduled visit. If you are unsure of whether or not you are experiencing an emergency, reach out to your dentist immediately. They will help to determine whether you need to see an emergency dentist.
