What Should You Expect at a Regular Dental Visit?
If you haven’t been to the dentist for a regularly scheduled visit in a while, you may be wondering what to expect. Below is information about why you should schedule an appointment for a regular cleaning and checkup, what you should expect during your visit, and how you can take care of your oral health at home to avoid any advanced dental procedures.
Why a Teeth Cleaning?
Teeth cleanings and examinations are imperative when it comes to your oral health. During these visits, your hygienist and dentist will be able to provide a level of professional cleaning you won’t be able to reach at home. They will also leverage their years of experience and expertise to thoroughly examine your oral cavity to ensure you aren’t suffering from oral health conditions.
Cleanings and checkups are not optional and generally are needed at least every six months.
What Should You Expect at a Regular Dental Visit?
A regular dental visit (or a cleaning and checkup) involves a few common steps. When you arrive at the office, especially if it is your first visit, you may be asked to fill out some paperwork. Once the cleaning and checkup begin, your dentist or hygienist may decide to take X-rays. This is especially the case if you haven’t visited in a while or it is your first visit to our office. Once X-rays are taken, the cleaning will begin. Your hygienist will remove tartar and plaque buildup with special tools. They will also polish your teeth. An initial exam will be performed by the hygienist, then your dentist will come and take a look. If there are any larger issues like gum disease, a root infection, a cavity, or any other oral healthcare concerns, your dentist will discuss the issue with you, along with treatment options. From there, an appointment for treatment may be scheduled.
You can expect the appointment to take under an hour. If no X-rays are required, the appointment may be even shorter. If you have any questions about the process or you are ready to schedule an appointment, reach out today.
